All guidesHow we test crypto tax software
We will build one test portfolio with a known correct answer. We will run the same portfolio through every tool. Then we will compare the result of each tool with the correct answer.
Status of the test
Our first full test run is in progress. We do not show test numbers until it is finished. Until then, the rating out of 10 is our editorial view of price, tax forms, country reports, DeFi support and public user ratings. Prices, plans, screenshots and Trustpilot data are real and dated.
When the run is finished, we will publish the date and the results for each tool.
The test portfolio
The portfolio will be a set of real transactions across exchanges and wallets. It will include buys, sells, swaps, a liquidity position, a bridge out and back, staking rewards, an airdrop and transfers between our own wallets.
We will calculate the correct net gain by hand with the FIFO method. Each tool will then get the same data. We will record the gain that each tool reports before and after its own automatic fixes.
What we measure
- Accuracy. How close the tool gets to the correct net gain, and how many manual fixes it needs.
- Import. How many of our test wallets and exchanges the tool imports without errors.
- DeFi. How the tool handles a liquidity position, a bridge out and back, staking rewards and swaps.
- Ease. How long it takes from sign-up to a finished report.
- Forms. Which tax forms and tax-software files the tool makes for each country.
"Off by" is the difference between the tool's net gain and the correct net gain. "Fixes" is the number of manual edits we need before the report is clean.
How the rating works
The rating out of 10 is our editorial opinion. Until our test is finished, it uses the price at common transaction counts, the tax forms and country reports, DeFi support and public user ratings.
The default "Recommended" order on the leaderboard shows partner tools first. To see the tools without the partner order, sort by "Best rating" or "Cheapest for me". Read our affiliate disclosure for details.
Prices and screenshots
We take prices from each tool's own pricing page and note the date of the check. Screenshots show public pages only. We do not show screenshots from inside a paid account until we have bought that plan.
Prices change often. Always check the price on the tool's site before you pay.
What we do not do
We do not give tax advice. Our guides explain the federal rules and link to the IRS pages they use. For advice about your own situation, talk to a CPA or an enrolled agent.
